By Joanna Arnow: Thanks for checking out this digital preview of my personal documentary i hate myself :) It will be streaming here on NoBudge for the whole day (Thursday, November 7th), and we’ll have a live Q&A at 8:30pm EST with co-editor Max Karson (via chat) and associate producer Lucy Bickerton – we would love to hear your questions and responses...To tell you a bit more, i hate myself :) documents my yearlong relationship with racially charged poet-provocateur James Kepple. The film explores questions about gender and sexuality, and follows my experience as I learn to be more open about aspects of my identity that I previously found shameful.
By exposing myself in this way, I hoped to tell a story that would be relatable and could encourage others to look more openly at who they are too. And although it is just one film, I also hope that it will help change our culture of shame and conformity by challenging accepted norms of expression.
I’m partnering with NoBudge on this screening because I would like to share the film with you all and put it further out into the world. We’re still going through the festival process, but it was important to me to increase the film’s availability early on. While in some ways it was daunting to open up such a personal piece for online viewing, I wanted the distribution process for i hate myself :) to reflect the spirit with which we made the film.
Thanks again for tuning in. Please keep in touch on our facebook page! Watch the trailer below...
