A slew of films by NoBudge alumni and friends are set to premiere this week at the 30th Sundance Film Festival. Look out for these titles from some of the most exciting independent filmmakers working today...Indie veteran and NoBudge alum Joe Swanberg is back in Park City with his new feature Happy Christmas. Anna Kendrick plays a young woman who moves in with her older brother (Swanberg) and his wife (Melanie Lynskey) after a breakup. Ben Richardson (Beasts of the Southern Wild) shot the film, which also features Lena Dunham and Mark Webber. Swanberg's 2012 film, Marriage Material is available on NoBudge here.
NoBudge friend Alex Ross Perry’s much-anticipated follow up to The Color Wheel and third feature film Listen Up Philip will premiere as part of the festival’s NEXT program. [Disclosure: I worked on Listen Up Philip.] The film stars Jason Schwartzman as a writer on the eve of literary success and the relationships he forges and destroys along the way. Victims include his girlfriend (Elisabeth Moss), literary hero and mentor (Jonathan Pryce), and his mentor’s daughter (Krysten Ritter). Shot on Super 16mm Listen Up Philip continues his collaboration with cinematographer Sean Price Williams. Indie queen Kate Lyn Sheil and actor Keith Poulson also make appearances. NoBudge screened Perry’s first film Impolex in 2012.
Representing the women of no budget filmmaking is Ghanaian director-to-watch Frances Bodomo, whose first short Our Secret is currently on NoBudge. Her second short Boneshaker premiered at Sundance in 2012, and she returns this year with Afronauts, a sumptuous alternate history of Zambia’s 1964 space race.
And in the U.S. documentary competition we have Andrew Droz Palermo’s entry Rich Hill, a film about three Missouri boys on the brink of adolescence. Droz Palermo, a fixture on the indie scene, is also a cinematographer who shot films including Hannah Fidell’s A Teacher and Adam Wingard’s You’re Next. His short A Face Fixed had its online premiere on NoBudge in 2011.
Among several other NB-connected films premiering are Todd Rohal's new film Rat Pack Rat & Dustin Guy Defa's Person To Person. Their previous films, The Guatemalan Handshake and Bad Fever, respectively, were featured on NoBudge.
