3 short vids featuring the New York comedian/actor/director, John Early. Each an outrageous but sharp sketch dealing with gender, sexual orientation & appearance. Tomfoolery with social context, Early is shrewd in playing with issues of the masculine/feminine and general obsessions with beauty+celebrity. In It's the New John Early, a man seeking to look more like Neil Patrick Harris gets a disfiguring facelift, and in his delusion, is pleased with the results. That is, until he starts second guessing, "On one hand, I love my new look. But on the other hand, I'm still gay."
Jason's Song shows Early portraying a youth pastor striving to appear macho while on a date with a glamorous woman in PR. "So what do you like to do for fun?" she asks, and without any hesitation, he answers in a fake deep voice, perhaps masking confusion over sexual orientation, "Hang out with 4 or 5 of my closest friends, and literally, we just don't give a fuck." It's a hilarious & astute bit, pointed at implications of bro apathy & extending on to homophobia.
In Skindergarten, Early plays a woman, Ms. Lapachet, struggling to keep her kindergarten class under control, reading from a picturebook about an unhappy pickle living in a refrigerator, enduring taunts from ballpark franks for its unsightly bumps. Early plays the role as a breathy, Southern debutante, imbuing every word with a double meaning or awkward enunciation. "Inside, that big, bright refrigerator lived a pickle, named Diller."
John Early is new to NoBudge but he's worked with some familiar NB names, like Nigel DeFriez (The Mud & The Greggs) who co-directed his latest. Early also stars in Santa Monica (coming soon to the NoBudge shorts program at the Northside Fest in June, info here) directed by Andy DeYoung and co-starring Kate Berlant.
