Ex-liquor store clerk, rabid Randy Moss fan, walking Twitterbot, weirdo legend, Beck DeRobertis (creator of Red Lobster, actor in Happy Birthday) is moving to L.A. & here's his farewell video. The conceit borrows from the infamous LeBron James press conference in 2010 where James announced he was leaving his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers to "take his talents to South Beach". DeRobertis himself says goodbye to Minneapolis & announces to the world (or just his friend holding the camera) that he's leaving home turf. The film is nothing more than DeRobertis sitting in his apartment reminiscing about his collections, talking about random pop culture paraphernalia, a notebook of only Randy Moss drawings, every newspaper from the Brett Favre era. "I have a few words to say to the haters: I have more V/H/S than you. I have more Lindsay Lohan magazines than you. I have more Moss jerseys than you. I have more Gaga shirts than you. So you can suck a fuck." Shot on VHS & recorded over a copy of Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back", Super Freak on VHS is pure DeRobertis, in his element, on his stage, delivering the lines of his life, in his distinctive Minnesota monotone voice. If you're not on board with the man, there may not be much to see here, but my recommendation is that you get on board.
