A group of keyed-up Brooklynites try to convince themselves they’re in control of their lives using daily affirmations. “Affirmations,” directed by Kady Ruth Ashcraft, is a satirical jab at self-help videos and the dubious reliability of positive thinking. We scan through the desperate individuals, each with their own ailments and preoccupations, all on the verge of breakdown as they try to stave off the darkness (“my body is a marvelous machine”). That’s where the “expert” comes in to help them through (and take their money), and the video would be worth the price of admission just for Tallie Medel’s turn as a guru in a white room giving nonsensical life advice — you can start seeing results in “5 to 70,000 business days”! Consider us convinced. [Watch on YouTube]. (3 minutes). Written and directed by Kady Ruth Ashcraft. DP / Editor: Geoffrey Stevens. Sound: Michelle Byron. Starring Tallie Medel, Bailey Belzora, Carmen Christopher, Alise Morales, Milly Tamarez, SJ Son, and James Folta.
