In this animated adaptation of a lateral-thinking puzzle, a group of people attempt to guess what drove a man to suicide. “Albatross Soup,” directed by Winnie Cheung, forms its conundrum with a chorus of questions and speculations. The riddle is this: A man gets off a boat. He walks into a restaurant and orders albatross soup. He takes one sip, pulls out a gun, and shoots himself to death. So, why did he kill himself? The fun of the piece is in the interaction of the guessers and the holder of the enigma, especially since this isn’t a simple old-fashioned riddle, but a complicated story filled with disturbing turns. Meanwhile the dizzying visual landscape (illustrated by Fiona Smyth; animation directed by Masayoshi Nakamura) pops with imagination and color. (7 minutes).
