An old fella shows up from nowhere and shakes up the neighborhood in this Hungarian animated short. “Balcony,” directed by David Dell’Edera, establishes a wonderful eye for mundane detail and atmosphere through its depiction of an ordinary apartment complex in Budapest. We soak up the everyday rhythms of the residents and the sounds that surround them — poker chips against a table, a soccer ball clanging against a wall outside, a lighter struggling to light. The day is disturbed, however, when a mysterious man enters the milieu with a simple but strange act triggering an unexpected response from the neighbors. Succeeding both as a minimalist piece of animated verite, and as a fascinating psychological experiment, it reaches profound heights while staying open for interpretation. (6 minutes).
