*Online Premiere* After experiencing a painful breakup, a young man struggles to move on. “Bonfire,” a hybrid documentary examination of heartbreak, directed by Memphis filmmaker Kevin A. Brooks, is notable for its unique combination of elements — a scripted opening scene of a man trying to lift up his despondent friend (played by Brooks), merges with old home videos of happier days, and then into a section of interviews, all presented with simplicity and style. Knowing that Brooks’ film was a response to his own breakup (read more about the project’s origins here), it plays somewhat like a group therapy session, one filled with empathetic and open-hearted voices aiming to comfort.
