Recovering from a traumatic brain injury, a US combat veteran attempts to find a job in the civilian world. This devastating drama from director and actor, David Call, finds resonance in quiet authenticity (Call’s brother is a veteran whose experience with other vets sparked the script), and its focus on the day-to-day struggles of living with brain damage. Though physically fine, Cole returns home from active duty debilitated in speech and memory — he forgets to shave in the morning, mixes up green and blue; his wife essentially walks him through his day. The centerpiece scene finds Cole struggling to communicate with a possible new employer about his skill set and service background, where heartbreaking new details emerge. Call has been a mainstay in indie film and TV for many years, but this is his finest performance, and one of the best of the year. Ana Kayne and Will Janowitz are wonderful in supporting roles.
