In her high school theater class, Krista uses a scene study as catharsis. Directed by Danny Madden, this passionate vignette is notable for its seething performance by Shirley Chen (SXSW Special Jury prize winner) and visceral depiction of gathering rage. Dealing with harassment and bullying from classmates, Krista puts all of her anger and confusion into preparing for a performance. “There is liquid magma surging inside me," she practices into the mirror, a passage from a play, but just as relevant to her actual life. Her class receives encouragement from their teacher to deal with real world emotions from the confines of the stage. That’s what theater (and art in general) is there for, he insists. Krista is already there. Scraping against a fresh wound, “Krista” taps into the moment with a parable of reckoning that lands a direct punch, especially in its riveting final moments. “Do you consider lightning an overreaction?” (10 minutes). A film by Ornana. Directed by Danny Madden. Starring Shirley Chen.
