*Online Premiere* A stay-at-home mom experiences an unexpected upheaval during her daily routine. This Super 16mm short by Jake Kolton is about the other side of motherhood, beyond the joys. While her young son peacefully watches cartoons from bed, she’s left to take care of the house. The thankless, tedious work stacks up and a breaking point arrives in the form of a toy firetruck that keeps inadvertently turning on, grating sirens, flashing lights and all. “Monster” is most notable for the way it manifests frenzy in a should-be comfortable domestic environ, and for its admirably unrestrained performance by Mascha Mareen. She’s filmed in a series of energetic close-ups over a bleeding string score. We learn next to nothing about her, or her family situation, and yet when mania erupts, we feel her pain. (5 minutes). Directed by Jake Kolton. Written by Jake Kolton & Audrey Findlay. Starring Mascha Mareen. Edited by Carlos Pérez Segarra. Production Design by Annie Chernecky. Director of Photography Cory Fraiman-Lott. Produced by Casey Bader. Music by Zak Engel.
