*Online Premiere* A young man spends the day skateboarding with his friends but underlying issues of race and identity keep him surrounded. Director Kevin Brooks is a promising young voice (he’s only 23) from Memphis, Tennessee, and his short delivers with strong visuals and a simple but powerful story.
Quickly establishing a poetic tone, Myles spotlights a young man without as many options as his white friends. While they envision traveling around Europe after school, Myles is just trying to break out of his own neighborhood. The conversation communicates deeply about differences in upbringings and life probabilities. When the trio of friends skate home through a storm drainage ditch, police officers spot them on private property and the casual day turns dark.
Brooks also shoots and edits, and he’s got an impressive command of each. Last year he was a finalist for the Sundance Ignite Program, and deservedly so, he’s got an important point-of-view, and talent to match. (8 minutes) Starring Lawrence Matthews. Produced by Morgan Jon Fox.
