An atmospheric drama from Belgium about two young sisters living with a dark tradition. Notable for its ominous setting and restrained execution, the film finds power in subtle glances or soft spoken prayers, and within the tender but fraught relationship between the sisters, Leonie and Eva.
In a remote countryside, the girls walk alongside the road in a drizzling rain. Tasked with a sacrifice to demonstrate faith, they hitch a ride from a stranger and prepare their pact. The younger is fearful while the older maintains a calm sense of duty. They make their way through the woods, onto a river toward a tiny island and the sacred tree.
Evocative but enigmatic, Pact alludes to the ancient traditions of any faith, a call to the gods, the lengths mankind goes to in order to live in communion with their higher powers. A gloomy portrait of obedience featuring compelling performances, unnerving imagery and alert pacing. Directed and edited by Matthias De Bondt, a young filmmaker to watch from Brussels.
