*Online Premiere* Two adult cousins have different views on a secret sexual encounter from their youth. Hallie Cooper-Novack directs “Relations,” an acutely conceived drama about culpability and perception in an age of shifting gender dynamics. An incident that occurred 15 years ago is on the mind of Candace as she attends the ritzy engagement party of her cousin, Jessie, in a hotel ballroom. Throughout the evening, Candace looks for an opportunity to confront Jessie (and/or his new fiancé, Alex) and she finally gets the chance as they escort an elderly relative to her room. Returning to the party, the cousins come to blows in the elevator, and the film doubles down on the event in question, illustrating a set of factors and defenses both have lived with for a large portion of their lives. The film feels fresh because it offers a very particular scenario, and fills it in with details that complicate rather than simplify. Cooper-Novack also recently co-directed the video for MGMT’s “When You Die.” [Watch on YouTube]. (11 minutes). Written and directed by Hallie Cooper-Novack.
