*Online Premiere* Unforeseen circumstances have brought a man to New York City alone. A trip that was meant for him and his girlfriend — they were to see a show — is now just him. And there’s something off about his Airbnb.
Using similar tactics as his previous work, an emphasis on unsettling and otherworldly atmospheres, director Zach Fleming draws from the horror realm but stops short. There’s something mundane about the new one, even slightly comical, aided by the quizzical countenance of NoBudge regular Rob Malone in the lead role. Also notable is the presence of filmmaker Joanna Arnow playing a mysterious woman who can’t be seen. (Btw: her new short Bad at Dancing hits NoBudge next week, and her previous doc feature i hate myself :) is now screening at Anthology)
Over the last couple years, director Zach Fleming has built an interesting body of work with shorts like We’ll Be Happy Over There and Outside, both distinct psychological explorations of the unknown. Staycation is another solid entry — Fleming deserves credit for trying something a little different and for including a dance sequence. (12 minutes). Starring Rob Malone, Joanna Arnow & Sam Stillman. Written & Directed by Zach Fleming. Produced by Jos Diaz.
