Mario Salcedo, known as Super Mario, has lived on cruise ships for almost 19 years and has no plans of stopping. In this fascinating documentary portrait by Lance Oppenheim, we follow along as he roams his latest ship, casually conversing with staff and other cruisers about his unconventional life choice. His only responsibility is to plan his next cruise. At its heart, it’s a film about meaning, an exploration of what happens when you’ve reached your career goals, obtained great wealth, and don’t have a family to share it with. Indeed Salcedo is a bit of a loner, and as time goes by, we begin to feel a strain as he tries to convince himself and others that he’s the happiest guy in the world. With its soft-glow visuals and vivid aquamarine color palette, the film operates in a dream-like realm. We can’t help but wonder if the dream was ever real. (11 minutes). Directed by Lance Oppenheim.
