*Online Premiere* On a drizzly day a long time ago, a group of peasants go about their daily lives while considering upcoming town gatherings. “Town Meeting,” made collaboratively by the comedy collective, Simple Town, is a wonderfully odd period piece where characters shuffle urgently through fields muttering redundantly, trudging through mud, and completing pointless tasks. Emeline pulls Elias aside to discuss an important matter. The pesky Cyrus interrupts. Emeline and Elias ditch him, and find another spot in the grass to stand, which is where they begin to scheme about throwing the titular town meeting, a meeting with a dubious purpose. The whole thing is one shot, filmed at a distance and zoomed in or out according to the action. It’s a simple technique but used to great comic effect, as is the obviously ADR’d dialogue.
