*Online Premiere* A young woman goes about her day not accepting the consequences of her toxic behavior. Directed by Samantha Carroll, “Toxic,” is a snapshot of Abbie, a self-absorbed California girl, narcissistic and oblivious to the feelings of others. Leaning on her naturally chipper personality, she attempts to dodge responsibility for all things — an old friend calls her out for sleeping with an ex, and she doesn’t come close to apologizing. “You’re obsessed with boundaries,” she callously replies, before digging even deeper, “It actually worked out because now I have this awesome roommate.” As she alienates those around her, she fantasizes about being adored by them, visualized perfectly in a late scene that wraps up the dichotomy of her delusion vs reality. Astute and well-performed, this darkly comedic character study isn’t concerned with full reconciliation but does allow hints of empathy. [Watch on YouTube]. (8 minutes).
