*Online Premiere* A young mother struggles with severe anxiety after the birth of her second child. “Troubled Waters,” a new drama from the UK by director Gemma Norton, is shouldered by an intense lead performance from Vivienne Bell, playing a character engaged in a minute-by-minute psychological battle with herself and her family. A heaviness hangs over the house. The exhausted Viv tries to go about her day, but she’s unable to shake a creeping dread that there’s something wrong. Though her husband tries to persuade her otherwise, Viv thinks their baby girl isn’t breathing right, that her endless wailing is not normal. On the verge of a mental breakdown, she self-medicates with pills and alcohol, and the film builds to a nerve-wracking finale involving the dazed mother at a swimming pool with her kids. Shot in a series of probing close-ups, Norton isn’t afraid to lean into melodrama and it works well here to reflect the interior state of a woman lost in panic and prone to bouts of rage and collapse.
