After receiving a text, Josh crafts a response. “wyd?” by director Josh Granovsky, is a low-key exposé on selfie photoshopping, detailing the process of one man going to great lengths to alter his appearance just to respond to a text message from a friend. A somewhat amusing, somewhat alarming glimpse presented entirely as a computer screen capture — we watch as the man boots up Photoshop and gets to work. All he needs is a picture of Jon Hamm to steal his eye color, and a picture of Tom Holland shirtless, to steal his bicep definition. Just enough to make it pop, not enough that it’s obvious. You wonder how pervasive the practice of editing selfies is and whether our society has deemed it socially acceptable (read Granovsky’s response to the question HERE). It’s not a new subject, but it’s made fresh here due to the fact that the transformation is being presented not in service of celebrity image-making (which has been fake from the beginning), but on a one-to-one personal relationship scale, perhaps an even more troublesome prospect.
