An aimless young woman befriends an up-and-coming actress but their relationship grows tumultuous. Kyra McConnell and Jessica Apatow co-direct, and both star in, “Unturned,” a unique look at online-to-irl friendships capturing the intricacies of social-climbing and obsession. Margret relaxes in her room when her roommate abruptly enters claiming to have made a doppelgänger discovery: a young, rising actress named Stonington St. Clair who he claims looks just like Margret. Quick to see where this could go, Margret shoots Stonington a message. A friendship kindles but Margret’s constant maneuvering becomes increasingly off-putting. Upon the night of one of Stonington’s performances, Margret’s envy makes itself loud and clear. 23 minutes of slow-burn suspense, the film is carried by the duo’s captivating performances along with a foreboding score. -JM.
