On a winter afternoon in New York City, two strangers meet and decide to keep each other company for the night. Directed by and starring Jane Stiles, “One Eye Small,” is an endearing portrait of relationship blues, and a love letter to Big Apple spontaneity. We find two young women starring out at the frigid East River, alone, distraught — Irene eating an ice cream sandwich; Eleonore screaming her guts out, “Why? Why? Why”. So begins their unlikely partnership, which, after a shaky start, leads them on a series of Brooklyn adventures, beginning with a Burlesque show, and ending wherever the night takes them. Stiles’ film wonderfully captures the free-floating energy of being open to your surroundings and fellow humans, despite having being hurt by both — her performance (and the film itself) unfolds with warmth and vitality. (Title from the book “One Eye Small” by Frances Sultan).
Written and Directed by Jane Stiles. Starring Jane Stiles and Hani Avital. Produced by Lizzie Shapiro. D.P. Leo Purman. Edited by Colin Garland. Music by Molly Burch.
