When Sherri gets arrested for shoplifting from work, she needs to find money for legal fees. Amandine Thomas writes, directs and stars in “Cherry Cola,” a dramatic portrait delivered with sharp-edged dialogue and vivid characterizations about a young woman on the verge of a breakdown. Living with her mother in what we assume is a difficult home life, Sherri schemes to find the cash needed to pay a lawyer. Thing is, she seems to have burned all of her bridges with friends and co-workers already. But when an ex-boyfriend returns home for the weekend, they reconnect and Sherri sees an opportunity. Thomas is a penetrating writer and nuanced performer, and her film is brought home with a perfectly executed final scene in a diner where Sherri maneuvers her way toward a solution. -KA.
