Jean and her band of snobs make an experimental song. Self-described as “Shit Tier,” this lo-fi lampoon by director Nimay Ndolo takes aim at the pretentious and the opaque (read: art protected from criticism because if you don’t understand it, you’re low-brow). Jean registers for a songwriting showcase and enlists the help of her friends to flesh out a song. But, when no one actually knows how to play music, the only option is to make an experimental song. It’s okay if no one understands, Jean insists, “they’ll spin meanings out of thin air. It makes them feel smart, and they want that.” This meta deconstruction is a light-hearted commentary with endearing performances, kinetic flash zooms and witty on-screen text. “All we have to do is bullshit this well enough to make ourselves seem legit.” Words to live by.
Directed by Nimay Ndolo. Starring Chanye Dunning, Bettye Tillman, Charles Thompson, and James Patton Graham.
