After getting badly sunburned, a young woman’s misfortune leads her on a strange and unexpected journey through Palm Springs. Maria Belafonte’s “Over Easy” savvily and playfully accounts the adventures of a mysterious young woman in a southern California landscape. Her back is scorched. She walks from a cul-de-sac to the supermarket in search of aloe vera. On her exit from the market, however, she’s sucker punched by an aggravated man — we don’t spend much time with him after the fact and aren’t really sure of his intentions. Surrounded by mountains, she pisses in the desert and then finds a casino where she skips and frolics. In addition to its filmic format and the old school inter-titles dispersed throughout, the film’s soundscape seems mostly comprised of ADR and foley, relying little on its brief dialogue and letting the spontaneity of the young woman and her surroundings flicker. -JM.
