Mourning her grandmother, a young woman takes a job that requires her to lure a mysterious entity from a hole. Casey Friedman’s “Pentatarmex Rabitular” is a quiet piece of sci-fi observed through its character’s mundane life and the bizarre occurrences that come with a strange job. Accompanied by her narration, we learn of the young woman’s green thumb, her close relationship with her grandmother, and that she’s recently moved to the city. Over cryptic phone calls, an anonymous voice recites random numbers that somehow correlate to the hole in her backyard. How she interprets the number is unclear, but her sense of urgency grows and the voice becomes increasingly dissatisfied. The enigmatic film creates a disturbing tone with an uncanny series of events and a stirring score that comes and goes. -JM. Director: Casey Friedman. Starring: Amanda Tugangui. With: Manny Dunn.
