After hearing a priest’s sermon, a man decides to focus all his energy on the first person he sees leaving church — a birder named Maude. Samuel Centore directs “Wise Words,” an eccentric comedy about a misguided effort to demonstrate compassion. After being convinced that he “must be there for all of God’s children…even the strippers,” Peter leaves Mass with a mission. Sensing that a stranger across the street could be in need, Peter fixates on her. As Peter obsesses over helping Maude, Peter’s partner, Elliot, repeatedly attempts to inform him of a potential health issue. With its odd rhythms and intentionally generic stock footage establishing shots, the film maintains an uncanny quality that’s both broad and esoteric. In 2020, we featured Centore’s previous film, “Tyler Works at the Gas Station,” which made our Films of the Year list. -KA. Director: Samuel Centore.
