Hustling up quick cash and alienating her loved ones, a struggling Twitch streamer stops at nothing to make it to an influencer meetup at Buffalo Wild Wings. Bobby McCoy directs “xX_luv.kitten_Xx,” an uncomfortably current character study that captures a type of youthful desperation that amalgamates around modern forms of digital lifestyle, presented primarily through the gaze of a 360 degree streaming cam. Marsha, or “Kitten,” traverses Little Tokyo head-to-toe in a bright pink cosplay outfit as she receives interest from strangers that isn’t always warranted. When an online crush and fellow streamer, “sparkle_gf,” invites her to the Buffalo Wild Wings streamer meetup, Kitten excitedly heads to Chipotle, where her sister works, to invite her to the event and get more content. Her sister expresses frustration for being the primary line of financial support to their ailing mother, motivating Kitten to take matters into her own hands with the help of a Hollywood Walk-of-Fame Spiderman. In its blend of 360 cam POV and vertical screen overlays, McCoy’s film is highly stylistic, energetically reflecting its subject material as we observe Kitten roam through L.A. in search of validation. -Jinho Myung.
