During a rocky but enlightened childhood, a group of kids disappear and find themselves on a fantastical journey to break the curses of black boyhood. Justice Jamal Jones directs “How To Raise a Black Boy,” an imaginative, free-spirited fairytale about love, secrets, and breaking away. After the disappearance of their father, a young boy and his sibling move to a remote home in the woods where their mother teaches them to sew their own toys, play music, and read storybooks. As the parental disappearances continue, a couple of friends move into the sanctuary home, and begin to share their lives, until they must find a way to escape troubling forces. Jones’ film is a rich collage lifted with powerful images and a self-assured vision. -KA.
