Blue Crush Angels
A lonely boy starts an online relationship with a girl until one day she vanishes. Matthew Chan’s “Blue Crush Angels” tells the story of an internet romance, beginning to end, from the young man’s perspective. “xXissssaaaaccc_Xx,” or Isaac, speaks to April, his e-girlfriend, almost daily. Over voiceover, he informs us about their initial meeting during the lockdown and how their first back and forth was discussing an MC Ride meme in a Death Grips Discord. As we hear more about April—she only smokes Marlboro Golds, recommends films like “Lily Chou-Chou,” and sells clothes on DePop—Isaac’s intoxicating infatuation with her is more and more apparent. Painfully aware of the intersections between youth and e-culture, the film offers a fresh look at online aesthetics within the realities of an asynchronous romance. -JM.
