Longing for a touch the casual encounters section can not satisfy, Tristan, an outsider among outsiders, is captivated by the appearance of a new man. Directed by Tristan Scott-Behrends, “Only Trumpets,” is a lavish glimpse into sex and love in the digital age, part cynical thesis, part experimental music video, part melodramatic romance. In a series of loveless encounters that kick off the film, Tristan, jerks off to VR camboys and has sex with other “sad, loveless strangers.” But it’s empty and lacking in intimacy. That is, until the arrival of a mystical man who emerges from nowhere and sparks in Tristan feelings that have been dormant for a long time. As an exploration of the impulses, expectations and complexities of homosexuality in a sexually liberated culture, Scott-Behrends’ film makes a heightened impression with ultra stylized compositions, highly saturated colors, and glamorous costuming, makeup, and art design. -KA. Written and directed by Tristan Scott-Behrends. Starring Xavier Jimenez-March and Daniel Crook. Produced by Rhianon Jones and Luka Fisher. Director of Photography: Kelsey Talton. Editor: Amy Von Harrington. Production Design: Tyler Lumm. Costume Design: Keyla Marquez. Hair & Make-up: Rocky Calderón. Colorist: Scott Bradbury.
