Cigales (Cicadas)
In the Summertime

Documentary, Short Films, 13-Jun-2024
On the sprawling grounds of one of France’s largest leisure villages, vacationers spend their days floating in a pool or congregating under the sun. Joanny Causse’s “Cigales” is an observational documentary on the summer season, an artful exploration of relaxation. In a series of photo-like compositions, we hop around various sun-lit settings. While parents hold fort at the campground, kids splash in the pool or enthusiastically wait in line for a water slide. As day progresses into evening, we engage with moments from the night life, taking specific notice at the larks of a group of teen vacationers. With every frame, the film offers painterly, almost timeless, glimpses at a seasonal landscape. It’s filmed in France but its place remains somewhat ambiguous as the emphasis revolves around the state of modern unwinding. -JM. Director: Joanny Causse. Producer, Editor, Colorist: Violaine Garsault. Sound: Simon Moyse, Julien Chabbert. Music: Makao.
