A young woman travels to a remote Victorian home to be a caregiver for someone who may or may not be there. “Madame Upstairs,” directed by Evan Korycki, is an ominous drama filled with striking visuals and eerie atmosphere. When Georgia arrives to take care of Madame Bouchard, she’s unsettled to discover that the woman never leaves her room, and in fact can’t even be heard through the walls. Georgia begins to wonder if she’s even there at all but there are signs of her presence — the soup outside her door gets eaten, and the ceiling leaks water from her bathtub. As Georgia’s uneasiness builds, reality begins to blend with visions and nightmares. The film’s psychological horror simmers and accumulates while Georgia tries to make sense of the world she’s entered into. It resonates increasingly as a metaphor, particularly complex in its final moments. -KA. Director: Evan Korycki. Cast: Charlie Agnew. Director of Photography: Luke Sacksteder.
