Drama, Short Films, 16-May-2023
After a failed suicide attempt that happens to coincide with the January 6th Capitol riots, a young black woman faces an atmosphere of white liberal hysteria. Nadira Amaris directs “January 6th,” which captures a dichotomy of moods within Gen Z circles through a lens of racial and personal issues. Alex wakes up dazed in her bathtub with a spilled pill bottle by her side. Coming to, she finds her white roommate in a tizzy about the unfolding situation in D.C., and that seemingly extends to every white person she comes into contact with. Alex is slow to comprehend the reaction, or fails to care as much as the others, in part due to the fact she’s going through her own personal traumas. Amaris’ film pinpoints a complex set of sensitivities and apathies on the political spectrum, unafraid to paint its protagonist at odds with the liberal establishment. -KA.
