An upstart drone racing competition attracts a smattering of enthusiasts trying to qualify for a national race. David Ehrenreich directs “Drone Pilot Has a Crisis of Conscience,” which takes a futuristic sporting event and creates an art film around it, surreal, experimental, and shot on Super 16mm. We follow a young woman arriving to the event — the Vancouver Drone Open — with high hopes to finish in the top three spots. The makeshift course has brought together a mix of hopefuls, all wearing various forms of VR-style helmets. When a practice round mishap finds the woman scrambling to fix her drone, it forces her into the titular ‘crisis of conscience.’ Ehrenreich previously directed “Pure Immersion,” similar in its somewhat abstract concept and ultra stylish visuals. -KA.
