A dance trip through anger starring Sunita Mani moving through an abandoned building dressed starkly in a white tank top and tights against industrial brick. Directed by Anu Valia, “Blue, Blue” is an experimental dance film with wonderfully expressive choreography and moments of sly humor. It's a bit of a departure from Valia’s previous shorts (we’ve featured “Troll” and “Drifters,” and her Sundance-winning, “Lucia, Before and After”) in its absence of straightforward narrative. But, as in all of her work, she leads with atmosphere and an assured sense of style and rhythm. Mani is one third of Cocoon Central Dance Team -- for my money, the best dance comedy trope in the world (see "Snowy Bing Bongs Across the North Star Combat Zone”) -- and she also stars in this Daniels-directed music video (with a cool 760 million views). She's got a magnetic presence and Valia captures her with enchantment, setting it all set to a pulsing, 80's-style synth track from COLLEGE.
