Although money is tight, a former stadium headliner plans to skip another dive bar show in a small town. “The Rock Star,” directed by Niels Blumel, takes us to the American outskirts where we observe a slacked-out musician in his endeavor to feel desired. The rockstar, Babyface Jones, has no interest in playing another crummy bar show, instead he skips off with the band’s vehicle searching for some kind of inspiration. Or maybe just to feed his ego. As he strolls through town, he tries to flirt with a pretty young woman and then has a run-in with a couple of college fanboys. With a wry comedic approach, the film leans into the irony and ridiculousness of its premise as it caricatures the male artist, his behavior, and vanity. -JM. Director, Writer, Editor: Niels Blumel. Cast: Oszkar Nosek, Matty Bickman, Meredith Wolkom, Ethan Cohen, and Luka Murro. Director of Photography: Ewan Creed.
