A wannabe Zumba instructor has an encounter with an alien while driving through the desert. “Planet Fitness,” directed by Paul Emerson, is a lo-fi, lighthearted comedy carried by the awkward charm of Katy Fullan, who writes and stars as Jessie, a hopelessly unemployed woman. As she drives, she studies note cards for her upcoming Zumba instructor test at Planet Fitness, a test she’s already failed. Though she claims to be very dedicated, she struggles to remember even the basic steps of the exercise class. Distracted and overwhelmed, she hits an alien with her car and establishes a quick emotional connection to the extraterrestrial being. Fullan is a NoBudge favorite as a frequent collaborator of Doron Max Hagay and she carries over her idiosyncratic appeal here. -KA. Director: Paul Emerson. Written by Katy Fullan.
