Memories and fiction begin to overlap when a pair of ex-lovers play a couple in a film. Stanley Xu directs “Reprise,” a film that blurs the line between performance and reality. In front of the camera is a complicated relationship between two characters played by actors with a complicated history themselves. The actress struggles to give the director what he wants — she can’t help but bring herself to the part, at times adding lines or becoming emotional. A trick of the film is to keep the audience on shaky ground regarding whether the scene is part of the scene or part of reality, a meta pivot from Xu’s previous short, 2018’s “Lullaby,” a lovely portrait about a Singaporean boy and his grandmother. -KA.
