There's No Werewolves in Newark
After a disillusioned EMT quits his job in Newark, he becomes entangled on a wild adventure that begins with a mysterious Craigslist ad. Fiona Kane’s “There’s No Werewolves in Newark” is a moody character study of a modern floater. Dead-ends double down for Bill when he’s dumped by his girlfriend on the same day as quitting his job. He bums around at the local library scrolling through the “gigs” section on Craigslist. Upon arriving to a one-time recycling job, a number of uncanny conflicts occur with his unhinged employer. It’s off-putting until the end, especially when it’s learned why Bill quit being an EMT. Nonetheless, the film handles the deadpan deliveries of this modern man, played by Ben Turok, with a unique playfulness. It’s a refreshing stylistic approach to a piece that’s also reminiscent of a classic hangout film. -JM. Writer/Director/Producer/Editor: Fiona Kane. Producer: Daniel Holzman.
