After getting rejected from space camp, Dan is forced to hang out with his “dark energy” cousin and discovers something far stranger than he ever would at camp. A silly but somewhat earnest comedy reminiscent of bad 80’s movies, "Serf’s Up" is a welcome antidote to “smart” movies everywhere. Littered with intentionally awkward line-readings and goofy one-liners, it’s not without some actual filmmaking chops as well — it knows how to build moments with clever visual details and production design, and it’s efficiently edited and plotted. Directed by Will Kempner, Serf’s Up is on its own trip through space and New Jersey, and it’s a fun little ride.
Starring Matt Kempner, Simon Johnston, Dan Lynch, Laura Pelliccia and Martin Pfefferkorn. Written, Directed and Edited by Will Kempner. Produced by Sarah Corrigan and Colin Garland. Cinematography by Alex Fjellberg Swerdlowe. Production Design by Mitchell Johnson. Sound mix by Hunter Berk. Original Score by Chris Fortunato.
