ApHasiA: Describe the City You Live In
Comedy, Short Films, 06-Dec-2023
Living in a city, an individual with Chinese roots is diagnosed with particular speech impediments. “ApHasiA: Describe the City You Live In,” directed by Shan Jiang, is a future-fiction diasporic tale that artfully tackles metropolis-living and linguistics. As we observe a sequence of geometrically composed frames, we meet “H,” a young woman who seems to be having trouble settling in a new, unnamed city. In an appointment with a “Dr. S,” H struggles with certain accent barriers and phonetic pronunciations while encountering coded messages and random objects. Encompassed by colorful interiors and a symphonic score, Jiang delivers an expressionistic reflection on assimilation and language. -JM. Writer, Director: Shan Jiang. Cast: Yuexing Sun, Tianding He.
