Burraco
Drama, Short Films, 23-Apr-2024
When her granddaughter visits her in Rome, an elderly woman seeks closeness before the end of the visit. “Burraco,” directed by Isabella Tagliati, is a candid slice-of-life set in Italy where we observe a tender relationship between two women of different generations. Wanda excitedly anticipates the arrival of her granddaughter, Isabella, from the U.S., where she currently lives. “It’s been about four years” since the two have seen each other, but it feels much longer to Wanda who isn’t even sure what Isabella does at school besides learning “arts.” The visit starts off slow as Wanda tries to get Isabella’s mind off her Steam Deck, but, eventually, she’s able to sway her into participating in some more quality time. Shot in a variety of sun-kissed Italian interiors and exteriors, the film is told through wide compositions where both subjects share the frame. -JM. Director: Isabella Tagliati.
