Chores
Drama, Short Films, 19-Apr-2022
After revealing something new to her long-term partner, a young couple has an emotionally fraught conversation at the grocery store. “Chores,” directed by Christina Tucker, is a dramatic vignette on the subject of poor communication and hitting personal limits. In the vegetable aisle, Samantha brings up the possibility of moving out of New York. This startles her partner, Lily, who is frustrated at her Samantha’s tendency to drop things on her out of the blue. Though Samantha’s financial instability is the overt reason for the sudden declaration, it calls their whole relationship into question, as well as how to deal with practical concerns like breaking their existing lease. Tucker sharply illustrates the difficulties of living in an expensive city, particularly those with a choice to leave; the desperation and exhaustion from not having enough money or time, and the unhealthy patterns that emerge from such challenges. -KA.
