Cold Runner
Short Films, War, 14-Mar-2024
A group of soldiers are administered a mysterious psychoactive drug and put through rigorous physical and mental tests. Angus McMaster directs “Cold Runner,” a 30-minute drama where the psychological effects on four young men slowly unfolds into a subdued hysteria. At a discreet military facility, we meet the soldiers as they stand before a laced concoction. Prior to drinking the liquid, they’re informed by a higher-up of the physical and mental endurance challenges that are to follow. They move forward without hesitation. As the day continues, the effects begin to take effect. During an interview where they’re asked to reflect on their current psychological well-being, one soldier expresses an immense paranoia and desire to go home. During endurance tests, others can’t help but break out into hysterical laughter. McMaster’s unhurried pacing and strong visuals work together to offer a discomforting observation on deteriorating states of mind. -JM. Director: Angus McMaster.
