Dear Maslow
17-Jun-2021
After a break up, a young woman writes a rueful letter to her ex-partner. Elizabeth Godar writes and directs “Dear Maslow,” a vivid montage of post relationship blues filled with specificity and style. Wearing a Supercross jersey, the woman composes her thoughts while smoking cigarettes, eating cake with her hands, chugging wine from the bottle, etc. She misses her ex’ idiosyncrasies (“the things I tried to shame you into changing”), like wearing toe shoes to meet her parents. Godar hones in, strikingly, on the romance of young pain, the complexities of desire, and arguing over brands of natural toothpaste. Also, “my hair is pink now.” -KA.
