Dye Red
Drama, Short Films, 01-Mar-2022
Celeste and Aurora have lived together for awhile but sometimes their friendship finds them bickering over mundane issues. “Dye Red,” directed by Vittoria Campaner, is a character study filled with vivid color and atmosphere, presented in vignettes that flow into one another with hidden cuts. The two roommates spend their days doing various activities — dying one’s hair red in the bathtub, drinking wine on the couch, preparing food. Often they find reasons to bicker, wine spilled here, gas stove left on there. And there’s a feeling that the gripes are adding up, and may soon reach a boiling point. Stylish and technically inventive, Campaner’s film is attuned to everyday movements and conversations, as well as the emotion of time passing in subtle shifts in mood and light. -KA.
