I Love My Friends
29-Jun-2018
Sometimes you can love your friends a little bit too much for them, but not enough for you. Such is the conundrum at the heart of “I Love My Friends," a new satirical piece by River L. Ramirez about the cliches of describing and feeling love, and the angst felt when it's not returned. Ramirez plays a young woman who comes on (stays on?) a little too strong. Her poetic recitations and perpetual physical contact registers as overboard to her friends played by Amy Zimmer ("Sneakers"), Ana Fabrega ("Photos of Ana," "Observatory Blues") and Patti Harrison. The childlike abandonment and confusion she feels when one of them takes a step back or needs space, is silly fun, but there’s real heartbreak somewhere underneath, a layer of complexity and darkness. As with her previous short, “Avocado,” Ramirez portrays deep anxieties from raw shreds of emotion and stylistic freaks-outs, elevating the work beyond simple comedy vids 😱 seen here slamming her face repeatedly into her bed over pulsating electronic music, “over and over and over again.” -KA.
