Malcolm Ex
Drama, Horror, Short Films, 22-Nov-2024
A man finds out that his lover's ex-boyfriend resembles his personal hero. Free Man Agyapong’s “Malcom Ex” is a darkly humorous look at navigating insecurities in a new relationship. A group of friends kick it on the beach. Guy and Nairobi have been seeing each other recently. With the rest of the group, the lovers share what they’ve been reading, discuss their cultural reflections and interrogate their knowledge of the self. Frank also shares that he’s been sinking his teeth in the autobiography of Malcom X; Nairobi’s friend laughingly remarks that X strongly resembles Nairobi’s ex-boyfriend. From there on out, we frantically follow Guy in his cerebral down-spiral evading a haunting ensemble of Malcom X specters. Moving briskly with its handheld monochromatic look, the film is a surprising but effective anecdote of early love and paranoia. -JM. Director: Free Man Agyapong.
