Pak Anggir
14-May-2018
Pak Anggir is a rice farmer in Bali living a modest, spiritually-connected existence, intent on passing along ancient Hindu traditions to his grandchildren. This calming documentary portrait directed by Ashleigh Goh Hua captures Anggir in his element, working the fields, blessing the offerings, and conveying the beliefs and practices that were once taught to him. In one scene, he tells his grandchildren that they would be wise to become farmers themselves. They don’t seem so sure, suggesting an encroaching threat to this way of life from the modern world. As it stands, “Pak Anggir” is a beautifully shot meditation about living humbly in connection with the land and the past.
Directed by Ashleigh Goh Hua. D.P. Garson Ormiston.
